Frequently Asked Questions
Why do you ask for a passport number?
We need your passport number because it’s a legal requirement set by the Tanzanian Government and Tanzanian National Park authorities.
What is altitude sickness, and can you get it on Kilimanjaro?
Altitude sickness occurs when your body struggles to adapt to lower oxygen levels at high altitudes (usually above 2400m). Symptoms can include headache, vomiting, insomnia, and decreased performance. Being fit helps, but acclimatization varies for each person. Severe cases can lead to serious conditions like fluid buildup in the lungs or brain. Our guides are trained to recognize and address severe altitude sickness to keep you safe.
What is included in the daily health check, and why is it done?
Daily health checks are essential for early detection of altitude sickness. We track your symptoms and measure your blood oxygen levels with a simple device that monitors oxygen levels in your blood.
What vaccinations do I need to climb Kilimanjaro?
Before traveling to Tanzania, ensure you are up-to-date with routine vaccinations such as Tetanus, MMR (measles, mumps, rubella), and Polio. These are generally needed every 10 years, so check with your healthcare provider.
Recommended Vaccinations:
- Hepatitis A and B
- Typhoid Fever
- Cholera (recommended for some)
Recommended Medication:
- Malaria: Depending on the prescribed medication, start taking it several days before, during, and after your trip. Consult your doctor for the best malaria prevention options.
Mandatory Vaccination:
- Yellow Fever: This vaccine might be required based on your travel history. It provides lifelong protection and you will receive a certificate, which is usually needed for entry into Tanzania.
