The drive from Moshi to the Rongai Gate takes about 3 hours, passing through scenic coffee plantations and banana trees.
On this route, you’ll ascend via Rongai and descend via the Marangu Route. This combination not only offers a diverse trekking experience but also boasts one of the highest summit success rates. The Machame Route is the second most popular Kilimanjaro hiking path, often referred to as the “Whiskey Route.” Known for its excellent summit success rates, this route employs a “climb high, sleep low” strategy to enhance acclimatization and increase your chances of reaching the summit.
Approaching the summit from the southwest, the Machame Route offers stunning views of the Shira Plateau, one of Kilimanjaro’s most fascinating and scenic areas. You’ll also experience the Lava Tower, a 300-foot (91m) ancient volcanic formation, and challenge yourself with a scramble up the Barranco Wall.
Descending via the Mweka Route, this trek combines adventure with breathtaking scenery, making it a memorable Kilimanjaro experience.

Kilimanjaro’s Scenic Gem
The Lemosho Route is renowned for its stunning scenery and lush landscapes. It offers some of the best acclimatization opportunities on Kilimanjaro, thanks to its gradual ascent. Along the way, you’ll encounter diverse flora and fauna, including antelopes and monkeys.
Approaching the summit from the west, the Lemosho Route provides breathtaking views and unique experiences. You’ll have the chance to scramble up the Shira Cathedral, a geological marvel that showcases the Earth’s remarkable history. Additionally, you’ll see the Lava Tower, a 300-foot (91m) ancient volcanic formation, and challenge yourself with the Barranco Wall scramble.
Descending via the Mweka Route, this trek combines spectacular landscapes with a rewarding climbing experience.

Kilimanjaro’s Ultimate Challenge
The Umbwe Route is the most demanding way to climb Kilimanjaro, known for its steep ascent and limited acclimatization time. This route is best suited for those seeking a rigorous challenge and testing their limits at high altitude. It’s ideal for adventurers who prefer a less touristic path and are ready to push their boundaries.
During your trek, you’ll experience a stunning hike through lush rainforest, with opportunities to spot black-and-white colobus monkeys. On Day 2, at Barranco Camp, you’ll join hikers from the Machame and Lemosho routes.
One of the highlights of the Umbwe Route is the famous Barranco Wall, a dramatic geological feature formed by volcanic activity between 150,000 and 200,000 years ago, before Kilimanjaro became dormant.
